This beautifully-written book reflects on the decision in the context of the wider state of the Church of England, and the sobering attitudinal differences with the Episcopal Church in the US.

There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a
kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty.1 Yet, as vast as the ocean is
before me, with all its unplumbed depths, God's love is even greater. The amount
of water in the ocean is only a drop when compared to the vastness of God's love.
And that love is offered to me at no price. I don't have to work for it, to buy it, or
even to make a promise. It's there for the taking. This is God's grace. I never
understood ...

O ye! who have your eyeballs vex'd and tir'd, Feast them upon the wideness of
the sea; O ye! whose ears are dinned with uproar rude, Or fed too much with
cloying melody, — Sit ye near some old cavern's mouth, and brood Until ye start,
as if the sea nymphs quired! The work that was to establish him as a poet,
Endymion, based on the legend of the hero's winning immortal youth through the
love of the moon goddess, was in itself a voyage of discovery through the
poetical imagination ...

The sestet, somewhat like though inferior to Wordsworth's 'The World is Too
Much With Us', contrasts the dull quotidian to the heightened being that is
characteristically achieved through the vision of Hellas: O ye who have your
eyeballs vext and tir'd, Feast them upon the wideness of the sea; O ye whose
ears are dinned with uproar rude, Or fed too much with cloying melody — Sit ye
near some old cavern's mouth and brood Until ye start, as if the sea nymphs
quired.58 ^ Ibid. 134.

As a Christian hymn says, “There's a wideness in God's mercy, like the wideness
of the sea; there's a kindness in His justice, which is more than liberty.” The
vastness of the watery expanse reminds one of God's eternity, and the gentle
ripples the peace of God. But there also is a negative side. Terror often lurks in
the deep. Evil forces inhabit the mysterious pathways of the sea. The early
baptismal liturgies of Christianity used images of watery demons now conquered
by God's grace.

Yet the sea is also the symbol of God's infinite love. The mystics speak of losing
themselves in the ocean of God's love, of being drowned in union with God, of the
abyss of wonder. And this theme is reflected in many hymns. Till in the ocean of
thy love We lose ourselves in heaven above. There's a wideness in God's mercy,
Like the wideness of the sea. The peace of the sea is seen as a sign of the peace
of God; the vastness of the sea as a sign of eternity; the 'self-loss' which comes ...

The figures of form in the octave retain a sound even in emptiness, but in that
very emptiness a new and articulate fullness will be found: O ye who have your
eyeballs vext and tir'd, Feast them upon the wideness of the sea; O ye whose
ears are dinned with uproar rude, Or fed too much with cloying melody — Sit ye
near some old cavern's mouth and brood Until ye start, as if the sea nymphs
quired. (Lines 9-14) The cavern in line 13 is now a "mouth," which Sperry rightly
calls an image ...

A certain depthlessness is thus attributed to thinking, just as the sea is returned to
surfaciality when Keats withdraws from the detail of the 'smallest shell' to a
panoramic 'wideness'. The breathing presence of a reader, who in coming to the
poem brings to it the sound of their breath and gives to the sea the presentation
of presence, is in the poem's opening octave alerted to their own condition of
being. The sea of the closing sestet necessarily withdraws into depthlessness
and surface.
